UNIVERSITY OF ORLEANS
The University of Orleans was officially founded by Pope Clement V, January 27, 1306, by four papal bulls (a bubble is a document in which Pope recorded the different university obligations, teachers, students and the privileges attached to it). The people of Orleans are reluctant to such privileges and try to oppose the founding of the university. After a particularly violent riot in 1309, King Philip the Fair confirms its founding in 1312. Civil and Canon Law are the lessons that are offer... ed there. The reputation of Orleans to the teaching of law was soon to cross our borders, at least until the fifteenth century. In 1793, the University of Orleans, like all those of France, was abolished by decree of the National Convention. The university's revival was initiated by Roger Secrétain, mayor of Orleans, elected in 1959, and Gerald Anthony, first Rector of the new academy created in 1961. Both wanted then establish, south of Paris, " the first major European university campuses "in the words of Pierre Sudreau, Minister of Education at the time. The first act was the acquisition of 400 hectares of the Source Field, kick off a major operation launched in the early 60s with the university campus, but also the creation of the new city of the Source and CNRS campus setup (1967) and BRGM (1969).
