The founder of the company, Joseph Ulano, was a Russian immigrant to New York. In the 1920s, he found work in the screen printing industry and set about to make improvements, especially in stencil making. In 1929, just before the Great Depression, Joe Ulano invented the film stencil. He formed a film coating company in 1931.
