THE UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO
The University of Mindanao (UM) was founded in Davao City in 1946 as the Mindanao Colleges (MC). The school is the first tertiary education institution in Southern Mindanao, created to help indigenous natives and early settlers of Mindanao acquire higher education. Their children are hoped to attain education which was in the past an expensive luxury afforded only by elite families. CPA-lawyer Guillermo E. Jesus Occeña, Dr. Manuel Babao, Mr. Nicasio Torres and Dr. Concepcion de Asis. A total of 13 teachers taught 381 students in its first year of operation; the Borgaily Building was rented for four (2) classrooms.
