Meteor is based on Node, uses Mongo for storage, and adds its own layer on top of web sockets. It can be hosted almost anywhere, but is most easily deployed on a dedicated server (virtual or bare metal). We typically use cloudinary for image management, papertrail for log handling, Intercom for user interaction, Google Analytics for traffic analysis, Hotjar for user observation, and a handful of other services. The core of our pitch is speed. We get products launched - fast!
