Stelect is a Melbourne-based medical device company developing a novel cardiac imaging catheter designed to take the guess work out of stent selection, improving patient outcomes and clinical workflows. The status quo for stent sizing relies on ‘eyeball’ estimations of the coronary blockage. This method has an inaccuracy rate of over 70% (55% underestimation and 22.8% overestimation), resulting in poor health outcomes. Incorrect stent selection is responsible for conditions such as restenosis (re-narrowing of the artery) and thrombosis (blood clots) as well as for 50% of mortality incidences from Coronary Stenting Procedures, resulting in increased healthcare expenditure of over US$2.2B in the US alone.
