The benefits of learning a language are well known: improved cognitive function, increased career opportunities, and deeper connections to the world’s culture and people. Over 1.2 billion people in the world are engaged in learning a non-native tongue. Despite this, foreign language education in the US is lacking - classroom education is declining and supplemental lessons or tutoring are either expensive or ineffective. Less expensive mainstream language apps generally consist of rote memoriza... tion flashcard apps, which lack educational effectiveness. Successful language learners have one major common trait: they engage heavily in “contextual learning” where phrases are learned in context through media, live conversations, or immersive experiences while traveling.
