KERBANGO
Kerbango built what was probably the world's first standalone Internet radio. It was designed to invoke familiar images and motions of traditional AM/FM radios, with two knobs to tune between 1,000s of stations around the world. It was based on the Real Networks audio player, then the Internet standard, and with assistance from Real Networks. Kerbango was one of the first Internet appliances to emphasize a back-end service which tracked the opening, changing and closing of Internet radio station... s on www.kerbango.com. This would now be called a cloud radio tuning service. Kerbango was also likely the first consumer appliance to use linux without a hard drive. Kerbango was acquired by 3Com Corporation. The first run of radios were being built when the dot.com recession deeply disrupted 3Com. The company closed all consumer products, including the recently acquired Kerbango. Kerbango alumni have gone on to other projects, including the first Kindle.
