Heartland Democracy is a civic engagement, educational, and research group, located in the Twin Cities and operating in the public interest. They focus on boosting informed participation in democracy and the economy, and They make the case for a practical approach to self-empowerment and self-governance. From the start, They have built Heartland Democracy as an organization bridging scholarship and everyday people. Their focus is the person in the street who does not have ready access to scholar... ship, wealth, and other resources and opportunities. They are a non-partisan public charity under the IRS’s 501(c)3 classification. Heartland Democracy works to empower young people to establish firm lifelong relationships with mentors, teachers, parents, their peers, and employers. Their flagship program, Empowering U, is a deep civic empowerment program that uses participant-driven curriculum to lead students in discussions around identity, values, community, and what the future looks like. Given the structure of school, learning requirements and benchmarks, and the normal communication struggles between young people and their parents, teenagers and young adults have minimal opportunities to explore who they are, what they believe, and how the world really works.More
