FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS BANK OF MASCOUTAH
First Federal Savings Bank of Mascoutah was founded in August 1913 as Mascoutah Building and Loan Association. There was an influx of new citizens at the time, but virtually no rental housing was available. The Building and Loan Association was founded by a group of local businessmen to help solve this problem. In contrast to banks of the time, building and loans could make long-term loans repayable in small periodic payments. Citizens with lower incomes were now able to secure home mortgages and avoid the problems associated with short-term mortgages.
