Esave Corporation was formed in April 2012 with the initial focus of developing electricity energy optimization systems for behind-the-meter installations in buildings. In 4Q 2012, Esave secured an exclusive international license with Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) for the commercialization of its Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) technologies that were designed for the optimization of renewable energy sources. Esave is an IBM Business Partner and was a finalist in the IBM Global... Entrepreneur Program in 2012. In parallel, Ireland’s Transmission System Operators progressed their ‘Delivering a Secure Sustainable Electricity System’ (DS3) program to enable up to 75% instantaneous wind energy on the grid. DNV-GL (Kema) was engaged to carry out an international review of the System Services regimes adopted in a number of international (island) markets. To date during 2014, we finalized the design of the Esave Hybrid Energy Storage System. In May 2014, Mainstream Renewable Power, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company with a portfolio of more than 17GW of wind and solar development projects agreed to partner with Esave and install 3MW Demonstration System in its 9.2MW windfarm in Kerry. In July 2014, they completed the financial modeling of DS3 System Services. They also applied for Horizon 2020 funding for the Demonstration Project that will be validated by EirGrid and DNV-GL. Wind and solar power are leading the global transition to renewable energy, forcing fossil fuel and emissions take a back seat to a smarter, greener, more efficient electricity generation. Renewable energy sources bring new challenges, as you can’t control the supply of wind or solar – despite their infinite abundance. Electricity grids are finding it increasingly difficult to manage fast growth renewable energy integration as they cannot function unless they are able to balance supply and demand. An imbalance results in voltage fluctuations, or worse. New ancillary services are being introduced to control the variability, uncertainty and asynchronism of renewable energy to ensure the continuous, secure operation of the grid. Their technology can break down one of the last barriers to 100% renewable energy by removing the need to run fossil fuel generation to control the ‘frequency’ of the grid and other system services such as inertia, ramping and voltage control.
