Surgical site infections (SSI), are a common complication following all types of surgery, and are thought to result from contamination occurring during the procedure. SSIs are the #1 cause of unplanned re-admissions after surgery. Around 60% of SSIs are detected after discharge from hospital, and a 45-hour delay in treatment of SSI increases odds by 3.8x of infection-related deaths. There is a huge unmet need for post-operative monitoring of the patient, and a credible and reliable early warning... system for surgical site infections. Until now, clinicians have had to rely on actual physical observation of the surgical wound to determine if an infection is present. A major concern is that infection may be present but not show any outward clinical signs and thus would be missed. Additionally, there may be a significant time delay before the physician may be able to observe the wound.
