AER Sustainable Energy Ltd is commercializing a proprietary enzyme technology developed in partnership with NUI Galway, which significantly increases the yield of oils, sugars, proteins and other chemicals from algal biomass. Products extracted from algae using AER’s enzyme process are used to manufacture bioethanol and biodiesel transport fuels, as well as in the human nutrition, animal feed and pharmaceutical industries. Unlike ‘first generation’ biofuel feedstocks, algae does not compete for resources with food crops and does not require large quantities of fresh water during cultivation.
